EU Presidency engaging on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Finnish Presidency of the EU together with the General Secretariat of the European Council teamed up with Prospex to design and moderate the first European conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education and training. On site in Helsinki, Prospex moderated the exchange between conference delegates and over 100 virtual participants to examine the ethics of using AI to teach, assess and grade Europe’s new generations. The conference promoted the responsible use of the AI by identifying underlying principles for decision-making focusing especially on data, ethics and privacy. Experts creating AI systems discussed the inherent human biases or prejudices that can be introduced in programming and the data being accessed by AI, and how system design can address these. Key debates included the role of the private sector in developing educational AI and the function of Education Ministries in controlling the curriculum and how students are assessed.  The outcomes of the conference feed into current policy discussions at the national and European levels and impact actions on the future development of AI in Europe, including the ongoing work of the Education Council of the European Union.
